In Search of Your Ideal Body

By: Daniel C. Mills, M.D., F.A.C.S.

How fortunate we are to be living in the modern age - a time when surgical techniques and technologies give us options for enhancing our appearance unheard of just a generation ago. No longer must we just "accept" the aging process or physical features that we feel could be improved. Today we can empower ourselves through cosmetic surgery to change our body and the way we view ourselves.

Breast size can be important to women both physically and psychologically. Women whose breasts are too large are often self-conscious. They suffer with back and shoulder pain. They can't always wear the clothes they like and sometimes feel they look heavy or "matronly." Similarly, women who feel their breasts are too small or not well-shaped often express the need to feel more "feminine." Breast reduction or augmentation surgery can eliminate these problems, completely reverse negative self-image and give a woman a whole new outlook.

Breast Augmentation
When augmenting the breasts, small incisions are usually made in one of three locations: underneath the breast, around the lower edge of the areola or within the armpit. A pocket is created into which an implant is inserted. Among the factors that influence the outcome of breast augmentation are the type and size of the implant used.

Most women today receive saline-filled implants - silicone shells that are filled with sterile saline solution. Determining the correct implant size is based on body type and the patient's personal goals. Dr. Mills listens carefully to what patients say they want, and helps them to make decisions they will be happy with.

Breast Reduction
There are a variety of techniques for reducing breast size; each has its advantages and disadvantages. Dr. Mills will select an appropriate technique for each patient depending on breast size, the patient's goals for surgery and other individual factors. Patients are pleased to find that breast reduction not only relieves their physical discomfort but also enhances the shape and overall appearance of their breasts.

Liposuction
People whose genetic makeup has saddled them with "saddle-bags," or other unwanted fat deposits, can significantly reduce them - safely and permanently. Liposuction, reported to be the most popular of all aesthetic surgical procedures, is particularly well-suited to women and men who are of relatively normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that cause areas of their body to appear disproportionate. Liposuction can be performed on several areas of the body at the same time, and may be done in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures.

Liposuction is performed by inserting a small hollow tube, called a cannula, through one or more tiny incisions near the area to be suctioned. Incisions are usually less than one-quarter inch and are placed inconspicuously within the skin folds or contour lines. The cannula is connected by tubing to a vacuum pressure unit, and guided by the surgeon; it literally vacuums fat away. The end result is a slimmer, firmer-looking body contour.

The ultimate success of any cosmetic procedure is predicated on selecting a qualified surgeon and clearly communicating your desired results. Dr. Mills has the necessary training and experience to perform all types of cosmetic plastic surgery. Whether you choose to alter your breast size or to remove unwanted fat, cosmetic surgery performed by Dr. Mills can make improvements in your appearance that have lifelong positive effects.
