SAW PALMETTO BERRY

In the past half century a number of large well-designed clinical trials have indicated that this berry is a worthwhile remedy for men with benign prostatic hypertrophy, also known as an enlarged prostate. Because about half of all men over the age of 50 have somewhat enlarged prostates, and prescription prostate drugs have serious side effects, the potential market for the plant is huge.
"Studies show saw palmetto to be more effective than conventional therapies for relief of symptoms and considerably safer," says Robert McCaleb of the Herb Research Foundation. In one clinical trial 88 percent of about 300 patients with prostate problems considered the saw palmetto therapy successful, as did their physicians. The berry doesn't shrink the prostate but rather relieves symptoms of enlargement, such as the frequent urge to urinate.

The bottom line:
The herb creates no problems if taken with other drugs and causes only the occasional stomachache. Experts recommend one to two grams of the dried berry or 320 mg of an extract of the fat-soluble ingredients per day.
