Cognac
The history of Cognac has many beginnings. It is a story that crosses oceans, spans continents, and forms around many figures. There are stories of why it was created. Tales of who created it and when. But the true history of Cognac, and the destiny of Rémy Martin, begins with the discovery of double distillation.
According to legend, in the late sixteenth century, the Chevalier de la Croix had a dream in which a voice instructed him to distill his wine twice. The second distillation was to improve the quality of the first. The Chevalier took his discovery, in the form of two barrels, to the monks of Renorville. The contents of the first were drunk immediately. The second barrel was hidden away in a cellar to await celebration of a momentous event. This event occurred 15 years later with the visit of the Bishop of Saintes. But a surprise was in store for the monks, the barrel was no longer full. Evaporation had done its work. The eaux de vie had changed color, acquired a new taste, mellowing and growing richer. Cognac was born.
For more than a century, mankind worked to perfect his Cognac. Through innovation, coincidence, and a touch of pure chance, Rémy Martin entered the picture.
When Rémy Martin founded his own company in 1724, he was already skilled in the art of the vine. He knew his crop. He knew the value of tradition. He knew the importance of time. The rest is history. Soon, discerning customers from around the world came to recognize the superiority of the eaux de vie from this one small area of France.
Through revolts and revolution Rémy Martin progressed, increasing its stocks and reputation. The company had taken the production of Cognac to a new level. With time and tradition behind it, Rémy Martin expanded its holdings acre by acre. Defining the land used to grow for Cognac. Contracting for grapes from only the best regions. Perfecting distillation. Using only the barrels crafted by the best cooperage. Demanding only the best wood.
This is the Rémy Martin known today. A company born from a dream and perfected over time. A company of two histories - each forever synonymous with the other.
